The challenge for museums, tourist attrations and exhibitions of other sort today is to engage visitors who are increasingly technologically aware and consequently more demanding of the type of experience they receive. The growth in wireless and mobile communications technologies offers new opportunities for such organisations who are constantly striving to improve this visitor experience.
|
The Seasus Wi-Fi Guide is an innovative, wireless context-driven information system which is able to track visitors as they move around the exhibits, delivering multi-lingual, streaming multimedia content to their PDA. The content can also be customised in real-time during the exhibit to fit the visitor's preferences.

Our Approach - Location Based, Context Driven Information Delivery
Location-based services (LBS) provide information and services depending on the location of the user and/or his mobile device, such as laptop, tablet computers, PDAs or smart mobile phones. The real-time location can be detected using standard technologies such as GPS, Infrared or Bluetooth beacons, RFID tags, WiFi Positioning or other custom built markers.
The choice of positioning technology to be used depends on a variety of factors, such as type of exhibit (indoor or outdoor), type of device used, range of the exibit and accuracy required. From our research over the past 2 years, and previous installations of the system, Wi-Fi geo-positioning has proven to be the most cost effective and reliable solution overall, providing a position accuracy with an error range of just up to 1 metre.
Considering that the setup of a Wi-Fi network is in any case required for large exhibitions, in order to stream large amounts of multimedia content to the mobile devices, this carrier technology is usually preferred, wherever possible.

The Content
Our approach provides extreme flexibility and manageability of the system:
- Content is stored remotely on a server, not on the device
This means that the amount of content is not limited by the storage capacity of the device, thus enabling the system to include a virtually unlimited amount of video, audio, images and text. This also reduces the acquiring costs of the devices
- Content Manageability
Any updates or additions of content need only be made in one location, on the server, rather than on each device
- Multi-Lingual Content
System supports for a virtually unlimited number of language versions for the content
- Real-Time Communication with the Device
Being constantly connected to a server, the devices can communicate in real-time with the exhibition's hub. This can be used to monitor the position of each device at any time for security purposes, or every to issue emergency messages
- Large Scale Automated City Guided Tours
The flexibility of the system also makes it ideal for open air, wide range digital guided tours, such as for small cities.
